After brushing, strong and weak layers are quite evident in the wall of this snowpit.

Resistance Profile

Using a portion of the sidewall that has not been brushed as described above, horizontally insert a rigid plastic or metal card, upside-down snow saw, or any straight edge approximately 2 inches (5 cm) into the top of the wall. Run the card down the wall, feeling the relative resistance of the layers and noting the boundaries of hard and soft layers. Pay particular attention to the location of weak layers that offer little resistance. Examining the layers in this way can help corroborate and expand upon the information gained from the stratigraphy profile.
